Healthy Aging
Healthy Aging is “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age.”1 Preserving the ability to chew nutritious food with healthy teeth and gums is a vital part of Healthy Aging.
Unfortunately, the mouths of many older Canadians are not healthy. A recent survey of older seniors living in Ottawa reports:2
John is a Healthy Ager who complained of “6 million cavities” over the past few years. He is also aware that his poor oral health is a risk for heart disease – something which was common in his family. Now he is a Prevora patient.
3 in 4
teeth are either filled, decayed or missing
2 in 3
seniors have gum disease
About half
have inadequate dentition to maintain nutrition
About half
in institutional care had serious bleeding gums
Importantly, many of these Ottawa seniors say they visit the dentist regularly and have good oral hygiene.
So, a new approach to Healthy Aging in the mouth is much needed. One which painlessly and conveniently manages the bacterial infections causing dental decay and gum disease.
